Hello, uli, dear Jellicle readers and listeners!

I had the opportunity of doing a podcast interview with the main cast of Ballet Philippine’s latest production: Edna Vida Froilan‘s PETER PAN.

Cyril Aran Fallar as Peter Pan - Photo by Oskar ProfosIn this interview are some of our best dancers in the Philippines who will take the lead roles in this ballet. We had BP’s Soloists, Cyril Aran Fallar and Victor Maguad who alternate with BP’s Principal Dancer Jean Marc Cordero for the central role of Peter Pan. Cyril started taking ballet at age 12 at the Manila Dance Center under Luther Perez, Tony Fabella and Eddie Elejar, and continued his performing arts training at the Philippine High School for the Arts for Theater Arts. In 2003, he joined BP as scholar, was promoted to apprentice in 2005, and became a company member in 2008. Victor was prodigy when he started dancing. He has performed in the company’s virtuosic classical pieces such as the Peasant Pas de Quatre in Giselle, the Esmeralda Pas de Deux and the Black Swan Pas de Deux. He won 3rd place at the 2007 NAMCYA Junior Ballet Category. In 2014, he was a competitor at the USA Jackson International Ballet Competition and won 2nd place at the 1st CCP Ballet Competition.

Joining us, too, were BP’s Junior Soloists, Jemima Reyes and Monica Amanda Gana, who alternate with Soloist Rita Angela Winder for the role of Wendy Darling. Jemima is graduate of the Philippine High School for the Arts and a dance major at the College of Saint Benilde, She has portrayed for the company featured roles in Sleeping Beauty and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and the female in the Diana and Acteon Pas de Deux. She won 3rd place at CCP Ballet Competition, and 8th place at the Asian Grand Prix International Ballet Competition. She was also a semi-finalist at the Rudolf Nureyev International Ballet Competition, and competed at the USA Jackson International Ballet Competition. Also a dance major in CSB, Monica started her formal dance instruction at the age of 8 under the guidance of Toni Lopez Gonzalez. In Steps Dance Studio she continued to train in Contemporary Modern, Jazz and the classical ballet syllabus of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD). She was trained and took classes with Sofia Elizalde, Raul Sauz, Eurica Balagtas, Jeffrey Espejo, Anna Villadolid, Jun Saagundo, James Laforteza and Max Luna III.

We also had the opportunity to have had one of BP’s Junior Company Member, Garry Corpuz who plays the role of one of the most lovable villain in children’s literature…Captain James Hook!

Tita Edna is best remembered as the Firebird, Carmen and Myrtha in Giselle with Makarova and Morishita as well as in major roles in the works of renowned choreographers such as Pauline Koner, Norman Walker, Alfred Rodriguez, George Balanchine, Doris Humphrey, Alice Reyes, Cora Inigo, Gener Caringal, Agnes Locsin and Denisa Reyes. Her full-length ballets include Peter Pan, Nutcracker, Alice in Wonderland, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Taming of the Shrew, Ibong Adarna, Gardenia, The Little Tailor and A Christmas Carol. Her contemporary works for Ballet Philippines, Ballet Manila and the Philippine Ballet Theater have been performed worldwide with critical acclaim.

Edna Vida-Froilan’s PETER PAN opened at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (CCP Main Theater) last  December 4, and will have its closing weekend starting December 11 to 13, 2015.
