BM's Lola Basyang Podcast

On the morning before the opening night last Friday, I ran to the Aliw theater to catch an interview with Ballet Manila’s President and CEO, and Prima Ballerina, Ms. Lisa Macuja-Elizalde. With her was the recently awarded Asian Grand Prix winner Ms. Katherine Barkman who plays Prinsesa Singsing in one of the stories in the show.

The chat with Lisa and Katherine was fun. We talked about how important Reyes’ masterpieces are, and how these timeless stories still amaze even the generation.

The three stories start with ANG PRINSEPE NG MGA IBON (choreographed by Osias Barroso) – a story about a princess who fell in love with an extraordinary bird. Second in line is ANG KAPATID NG TATLONG MARYA (choreographed by Lisa Macuja-Elizalde) that tells about a young man’s journey in search of her long-lost sisters. The third, ANG MAHIWAGANG BYULIN (choreographed by the late Tony Fabella) is a candid tale of Rodrigo – a hardworking man who’s been abused by his cunning employer.

Lola Basyang was the pen name of Severino Reyes the former editor of the famous Tagalog magazine Liwayway back in 1925. In between running the publication he penned enchanting tales about magical kingdoms and strange creatures. The stories were published in a section called “Kuwento ni Lola Basyang.”

Tatlong Kuwento ni Lola Basyang promises to be the perfect weekend treat for the whole family. “The kids will like the snake scene and all the live animals on stage,” Lisa said. “I also tried to be as “storyteller” as possible – I wanted the scenes and story to be briskly told. Pacing is key. The trilogy is a good experience that needs to be shared by the whole family.”

Thank you, Lisa and Katherine for gracing this podcast episode! Break a leg!
