NEWS: WCOPA Gold Medalist, Renz Fernando in Concert

The Breath of Life Foundation ,Inc is a non stock, non profit organization which was formed with the goal of producing and distributing the OstreaVent to hospitals in need .

Each year, many premature infants born in charity and government hospitals with significant respiratory diseases die unnecessarily due to lack of ventilators. The Philippines is 8th in the world in premature birth rates and about 35% of these infants will need a ventilator to survive.

Most commercial ventilators cost at least about P1.4 M each, a price which these hospitals cannot afford. Thus, the hospital resorts either to rental of the ventilator by the parents which often is beyond their financial means or do continuous, manual, hand bagging of the infant which often leads to major complications or death of the infant. To address this serious problem, Dr. Enrique Ostrea, Jr., an internationally renowned neonatologist and researcher, together with a group of mechanical and electronic engineers from the University of the Philippines and the Department of Science and Technology, developed the OstreaVent, which for the past 3 years has proven to be an affordable, safe and equally effective ventilator as the commercial units.

To help sustain our goal, we have organized this year a fundraising concert, “Renz Fernando in Concert” on March 28, 2019 at the Sky Dome SM City North Edsa, Quezon City in partnership with Sky Dome and Sinag Arts Foundation.

Renz Fernando is a mult-imedalist winner of four medals, including a gold medal at the 2017 World Competition in the Performing Arts (WCOPA) in Long Beach, Los Angeles, CA. He was a member of the Philippine participants competition and comes from the little province of Taw-Tawi, a tiny group of islands south of Mindanao. For his gold medal prize, Renz was awarded a scholarship prize of $10,000 fee per year at the New York Film Academy- Long term theater degree where he was the top performer in his class. Renz had only hoped to be able to represent his country for the WCOPA Competition and he went home bringing honors to his country and to his family. Proceeds from the concert will be used to subsidize the distribution of the OstreaVent to hospitals that will give the sick, newborn infants a chance in life and will be a gift that keeps on giving.
