NEWS: Ballet Manila’s 23rd Performance Season proves that they’re a force to be reckoned with

23RD-HOME-5

History, capability, and legacy—Ballet Manila is now on its 23rd year, and the country’s premier classical dance company tells us what they’re all about! Aptly titled Tour De Force, this season’s line-up features a selection of Ballet Manila’s best originals, a ballet classic, a returning favorite, and a world premiere of a double header.

Ballet Manila Artistic Director and CEO Lisa Macuja-Elizalde shares the company’s desire to stay as a force to be reckoned with, “This year, we have specially curated these shows in such a way that each one could be easily enjoyed by all. We want to tell the world that ‘This is us. This is Ballet Manila.’ In the only way we know how—through world-class performances.”

Tour de Force is off to a big start, as they ambitiously open the season with not only one, but two different shows over two weekends. Featuring the most memorable and iconic choreographies from Tony Fabella, Osias Barroso, Agnes Locsin, Augusto “Bam” Damian and so many more, Iconic 1.0 and Iconic 2.0 promises to be a stellar set of shows. “The opening of the season has now become a baptism of fire for the company as we revisit so many iconic ballets during our 23-year history. Opening with such a historical first also starts the ball rolling as we build towards our silver year,” shares Lisa.

Following the Iconic weekend is a true Ballet Manila spectacle. In their commitment to stage at least one classical ballet every season, Ballet Manila will present Le Corsaire (The Pirate), the classic tale of a pirate who voyages through the rigorous seas for his beautiful harem girl. Coined as one of the most thrilling ballets of all time, Le Corsaire is a story of adventure, love, and betrayal. Ballet Manila brings new energy to the classic while showing off their strength with the Vaganova technique, featuring jaw-dropping leaps and clean moves from a new generation of Ballet Manila dancers.

From tales of exploration, the mood shifts to something lighter as the family favorite Lisa Macuja Elizalde’s Cinderella returns to the stage. Lisa’s first original full-length ballet became a surprise hit two years ago, and Ballet Manila is more than excited to relive the magic all over again. The well-loved fairy tale has been given a light comical twist — expect a show full of theatrical comedic elements, modern live special effects, and romantic classical scores. On a personal note, Lisa muses, “I really missed “Cinderella” and I’m beyond elated about its restaging. The magic, the fantasy, and the wonder—it has everything the audience wants in a ballet!”

In true Ballet Manila fashion, the 23rd performance season will wrap up with the most special and newest double header, Deux. Ballet Manila’s frequent guest choreographer Martin Lawrance, who’s known for his work in “Rebel” and “Aria,” once again creates a choreographic gem with “The Winding Road” – a ballet inspired by the music of The Beatles. The other half of Deux is “Les Sylphides (Chopiniana),” a dreamy, romantic ballet featuring the the music of Frederic Chopin, which creates a telling parting statement for this season. As Lisa says it herself, “We can do classical and contemporary, we can do children’s repertoire and two historical retrospective programs, we can do anything!”

“Tour De Force” kicks off this September with “Iconic 1.0,” which will be on September 1 and 2, 2018, and “Iconic 2.0,” which will be on September 8 and 9, 2018. One ticket will be valid on both weekends.

“Le Corsaire (The Pirate)” goes on stage on the following dates: October 20 and 21, 2018.

Lisa Macuja-Elizalde’s “Cinderella” makes it triumphant return on November 24 and 25, 2018 and December 1 and 2, 2018 – a perfect way to celebrate the holiday season with the family and kids!

“Deux” will make its double premiere on March 2 and 3, 2019 and on March 9 and 10, 2019.
