Manila, PHILIPPINES – Timelessness is the magic of music. Its ability to evoke individual emotions and bring people together spans generations. From its beginnings in the 70s to the youth of today, the music of Apo Hiking Society continue to encapsulate the Filipino heart.
9 Works Theatrical and Globe Live! bring to the theater stage the music of Danny Javier, Jim Paredes, and Boboy Garrovillo, the pioneers of Original Pilipino Music in ETO NA! MUSIKAL nAPO! The story is written by director Robbie Guevara, loosely based on the beginnings of the group when his imagination was piqued after Boboy Garrovillo teased him about putting together a musical with APO songs in 2013.
ETO NA! MUSIKAL nAPO! is set in a university in the 1970s. It follows a group of college friends participating in a singing and songwriting competition. It follows them through the rollercoaster journey of youth; the romance, the friendship, the humor, and the slice of life, all under the adversity of Martial Law told through the songs of APO.
The daunting task of selecting the songs from APO’s discography was a joint effort between Guevara and dramaturg, Jonjon Martin. “I didn’t exactly choose them,” says Guevara, “Things just fell into place.” Musical directors Daniel Bartolome and Orly Dela Cruz has cut no corners in arranging the music to fit the theatrical stage and give it a fresh twist to tell the story. He shares, “I personally wouldn’t want to touch the original arrangements. The songs are already perfect as it is. But considering that it would be used in a musical, changes have to be made. Because it’s not going to be staged as a concert. But with a story. The music is part of the storytelling. I carefully chose which to omit, which to keep and which to change to best serve the staging or the scene,”
ETO NA! MUSIKAL nAPO! is a heartfelt tribute to the legendary OPM group and how their music has resonated with millions.
