Trial By Jury

MANILA, Philippines  – TRIAL BY JURY, a British one-act comic opera by the famed musical duo Arthur Sullivan and W.S Gilbert, is set to conquer the Philippine stage at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, tonight, May 8 and tomorrow, May 9, 2015 at 8:00 p.m.

Presented by two women-centered organizations University of the Philippines’ Women Lawyers’ Circle (UP WILOCI) and the ZONTA Club of Manila I and a partnership with Performatibo Manila Inc., TRIAL BY JURY revolves around a “breach of promise of marriage” lawsuit wherein the rational nature of the judicial system is being satirically questioned. Characteristic of Sullivan and Gilbert’s works, its plot is filled with farce; nevertheless, the characters seem not to discern the irrationality of the judgments, and behave but normally. The play targets the nonsensical and ridiculous nature or the supposedly logic-based system.

TRIAL BY JURY involves the Defendant in trial for dumping his fiancé, the Plaintiff, because she became a “bore intense” to him. The Judge admits of a similar action when he was young, although the Public and the Jury seem not to notice. When the Plaintiff is summoned, her charm instantly shoots to the heart of the Jury and the Judge. In the end, the Defendant is sentenced, and the Judge offers to marry the Plaintiff. The Jury and the Public seem satisfied with the legal conclusion.

With 131 performances since it premiered at the London’s Royalty Theater on 25 March 1875, Trial by Jury in its Philippine run is directed by the award-winning playwright/director Floy Quintos, with the costumes and stage designed by John Abul.

Moreover, to add to its classical context, the play treats the audience to Pure Classics, a front-act collection of delightful and light-hearted arias from some of the country’s best classical singers like Atty. Dot Gongayco, Joseleo Logdat and more.

Leading its impressive cast are members of the Performatibo Manila Inc and other Philippines’ best opera talents: Kay Balajadia-Liggayu (Mikaela in Bizet’s Carmen, Josephine Bracken in Binhi ng Kalayaan) as the Plaintiff; Nazer Salcedo (Mabini in DUP’s Aguinaldo, Mang Paco in Maxie the Musicale) as the Defendant; Greg Abelardo De Leon (Elias in Noli Me Tangere: The Opera) as the Judge; Noel Azcona (Count Monterone in Rigoletto, Elias in Noli Me Tangere: The Opera) as the Usher. Completing the ensemble are equally talented artists Myramae Meneses, Anna Migallos, Ronnie Abarquez, and the Viva Voce Singers with musical direction by mezzo soprano Camille Lopez-Molina.

Its first show on 8 May 2015 is sponsored by the UP WILOCI, a women organization of the UP College of Law with the purpose of improving the welfare of women and children through their acquired legal expertise, while the second night on 9 May 2015 is sponsored by ZONTA Manila.

“The proceeds of the show are for the benefit of the Free Legal Aid Program for the defense of disadvantaged and abused women and children,” said UP WILOCI President Diane Franco.

Meanwhile the proceeds from the second night sponsored by ZONTA are for the organization’s projects for the advancement of the status of women.

Hailed as the “most successful British one-act operetta of all time”, Trial by Jury is now set for entry in the Philippine stage for your judging (reckoning)
