The Philippine Educational Theater Association brings back this year’s Aliw Award for Best Musical Production, RAK OF AEGIS. With its limited run, PETA solidly closes the year with an soulful bang!

After seeing Rak for more than five times, I wasn’t expecting so much from this re-run. I already know each punchline, and know the songs by heart. But this month’s re-staging is a notch higher than its previous runs. It is crispier, funnier, and much more enjoyable! It still tells the story of  Barangay Venizia’s flooded streets and its hopeful characters, but the cast seems to just simply enjoy the songs and takes the PETA audience to a three-hour thill ride.

Worthy to mention are the performances of its main cast. POPPERS BERNADAS reprises his role as Kenny – the often misunderstood son of Venezia’s Barangay Captain (played wonderfully by MS. ISAY ALVAREZ). Bernadas’ vocal range wonderfully recreates the Aegis songs that we know, and personalises the depth of Kenny’s character even more. KIM MOLINA as Aileen is a must-see. She returns to flooded Venizia and beautifully brings back the magic of the Aegis sound with her own soulful versions. Her Aileen is a more convincing, touching representation of the Filipino heart – thriving, hopeful and buoyant. ISAY ALVAREZ (Mary Jane) and husband ROBERT SEÑA (Kiel) are still at the top of their class. As former lovers, they perfectly depict the delight and the pangs of nostalgia. Finally, PEPE HERRERA as Tholits is a show-stopper. His magnetic appeal draws his audiences to a magnificent halt. His love-sick nuances, and even his controlled hysterics bring the show to a side-splitting experience. When Herrera sings and dances, we see ourselves and unknowingly smile at ourselves. For that, we love him even more. #TeamTholitsForever!

This month’s RAK OF AEGIS is PETA’s Christmas treat to us, Filipinos. It is a story that reminds us, that despite the storms, we still faithfully rise above its ruins with a smile and with a song. Though a common story for most of us, seeing and hearing it, will still make our hearts soar.

See it for yourselves! My friend did, and she became an instant PETA fan.
