The New Kids of Rydell High (9 Works Theatrical’s GREASE)

Get your leather jackets, skinny jeans, and flared skirts ready – Grease is back and better than ever! Rydell High has opened its doors to a new crop of talents to bring your all-time favorite cool kids to life. They’re fit, fab, and all revved up to sing, dance, and help you get into the swing of those summer nights all over again. Since its original Broadway debut, Grease has become one of the world’s most staged musicals, spanning over three decades of delighting audiences with an energetic and ravishing score and a delectable love story that can make anyone from 16 to 60 fall in love all over again.

The popular 1978 movie adaptation starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John is noted for being one of the most successful and highest-grossing movie musicals in history. Since then, Grease has had several Broadway and West End revivals and the stage version has gone on to include popular songs from the movie such as Hopelessly Devoted to You, Sandy, Grease is the Word, and You’re the One that I Want. With book, music, and lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, Grease introduces us to the seniors of Rydell High. We first meet Danny Zuko, leader of the rambunctious T-Birds who dominate the school alongside the troublesome Pink Ladies.

Meanwhile, sweet and charming Sandy Dumbrowski is the new girl in school. Unbeknownst to the student populace, Danny and Sandy had a very memorable and romantic summer fling. Things heat up, however, when Danny sticks to his macho reputation leaving Sandy alone, trying to make sense of her predicament and goody-good personality. Matched with other teenage complications of growing up, fitting in and falling in love, it’s a classic, coming-of-age story of humorous yet unforgettable proportions.

Actor and TV personalities Guji Lorenzana and Tippy Dos Santos breathe new life into the iconic Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski. Growing up, Guji already knew that performing was his passion. A familiar face on television, he’s headlined several shows such as Precious Hearts Romances Presents the Bud Brothers and Somewhere In My Heart, as well as several soaps and movies. Theater credits include West Side Story, Legally Blonde, and Ballet Philippines’ Tales of the Manuvu. Along with his sister, Guji joined the premier season of The Voice of the Philippines under Team Apl de Ap of the Black Eyed Peas.

Sweet as sugar, Sandy will be played by Tippy Dos Santos who has proven her versatility as a performer with her works in television, theater, and music. She has played several leads such as Belle in Beauty and the Beast and Gertrude in Seussical with Ateneo Children’s Theater, Wendy in Peter Pan for which she was nominated for a Gawad Buhay Award for Best Actress, and Ariel in The Little Mermaid in Lebanon. Her movie works include Raketeros, Once a Princess, and I Do Bidoo Bidoo for which she won two awards: Star Awards New Movie Actress of the Year and Golden Empress Breakthrough Performance by an Actress in 2013. Her interpretation of the song Dati with Sam Concepcion and Quest earned them the top prize at the 2013 Philpop Competition. She also supports several advocacies, serving as famine ambassador for World Vision and ambassador for the environment for DENR.

Making her comeback in the local theater scene as the feisty Betty Rizzo is Antoinette Taus who is no stranger to Philippine showbiz. Starting her career as a commercial model at age four and being part of the hit show, Ang TV, she continues to impress us with her beguiling acting talent. Though mostly associated with TV and movies, Antoinette’s talent for the stage has earned her roles such as Gavroche in Repertory Philippines’ Les Miserables, Dorothy in The Wiz, Libby in I Ought to Be in Pictures, and Princess Jewel in The Little Mermaid. She is undoubtedly a triple threat.

Original cast members Peachy Atilano and Sarah Facuri round up the Pink Ladies as the good-natured, beauty school dropout Frenchy and compulsive-eating Jan, respectively.
Other original cast members who will reprise their roles include James Stacey as the fast-talking DJ Vince Fontaine, Harold Cruz as the awkward class valedictorian Eugene Florczyk, Sab Jose as the enthusiastic cheerleader Patty Simcox, and Angela Padilla as the no-nonsense English teacher Miss Lynch.

The artistic team of Grease is headed by Robbie Guevara as director, together with Lorenz Martinez as assistant director, Joseph Tolentino as musical director for instrumentation, Sweet Plantado-Tiongson as musical director for vocals, Arnold Trinidad and Francis Matheu as choreographers, Mio Infante as scenographer (set and costume designer), John Batalla as lighting designer, Chuck Ledesma as sound designer, Myrene Santos as hair and makeup designer, Gerhard Daco as Technical Director, Twinkle Zamora for costume execution, Leo Castillo as photographer, Tin Samson as playbill editor, and Larry Palma as graphic designer.

For over 40 years, Grease has remained one of the world’s most popular and beloved musicals. Time Magazine even dubbed its 2007 Broadway revival as the “#1 Musical of the Year.” Now Danny, Sandy, Rizzo, Kenickie, and the Rydell gang are back, ready to bop and hand-jive at the RCBC Plaza, Makati, all weekends from November 15 to December 7, 2014. Grease will have Friday and Saturday galas at 8:00pm, Saturday matinees at 3:30pm and Sunday matinees at 4:00pm.
