In its 44th Season, the Philippine Education Theater Association (PETA) will be bringing its award-winning musical to a bigger stage this Friday. Yes, this time, WILLIAM goes to CCP!
Ron Capinding’s WILLIAM is a rap-musical about a group of youngsters determined to find their purposes in life, only to realize that even Shakespeare has a lot to say on their journey.
The show harvested a total of seven top prizes at the recent Philstage Gawad Buhay Awards, including Outstanding Play, Outstanding Ensemble Performance for a Play, Outstanding Original Script for Ron Capinding, and Outstanding Stage Direction for PETA artistic director Maribel Legarda.
The play also took home of the performance awards: Outstanding Male Lead Performance for Ian Segarra, Outstanding Female Featured Performance for Meann Espinosa and Outstanding Male Featured Performance for Jojo Atienza.
The first time I saw this at the PETA Theater, I came in without expecting much. It was only after 2 hours and half, when I was on my way back to the car that I found myself reliving those Shakespeare moments in High School and planning to put up my own Shakespeare club.
Shakespeare, indeed has so much to say; and this musical says it with style!
This hit musical familiarizes young people with the beauty of Shakespeare’s works and re-invents the Bard using rap rhythm and hip-hop beats. The musical touches on themes of adolescence, parents’ unconditional love and friendship and promotes respect for teachers and classmates, and advocates love for reading and appreciating literature—Shakespeare or not.
WILLIAM will have a limited run this Friday, September 28 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Little Theater with shows at 3pm and 8pm.
